“If a law is unjust, a man is not only right to disobey it, he is obligated to do so.”
– Thomas Jefferson
I have always loved this quote, as it does not only speak to the necessity (in my opinion) of civil disobedience when facing injustice within a society’s legislative system or culture, but when we come across a religious doctrine, or accepted idea or action within our society that is or supports injustice. As spirits engaging in human experiences, it is our duty to promote love and positive universal law and to resist all that contradicts the truth and presence of the Most High universal law known as “God” or “Allah” or “Yahweh” or “Great Spirit” or “The Great I Am”, etc…

“We live in the present, we dream of the future, but we learn eternal truths from the past.”

The ancient, and still present, wisdom of Sankofa (in the Akan tradition of Ghana) loosely translates in English to ” go back to fetch it” (san – to go back; ko – to go; fa – to look, to seek and take). The wisdom of this principle comes to mind when I read Lucy Maude Montgomery’s quote because many of us do not see the importance of gathering our truths and our knowledge from the past. While we should never live in the past, receiving the wisdom that comes from times gone by is a priceless gift, however, that we have all been blessed to receive.
The next time you remember a troubling time in your life or in the life of others, or the next time you endure a difficult situation just remember that the experience of that event, the knowledge of that which will become the past will guide you in a better direction from that point forward. It’s up to you!
Remember the old Akan proverb, “Se wo were fi na wosankofa a yenkyi,” … translation: “It is not wrong to go back for that which you have forgotten.”

“A true revolution of values will soon look uneasily on the glaring contrast of poverty and wealth. With righteous indignation, it will look across the seas and see individual capitalists of the West investing huge sums of money in Asia, Africa, and South America, only to take the profits out with no concern for the social betterment of the countries, and say, “This is not just.” It will look at our alliance with the landed gentry of South America and say, “This is not just.” The Western arrogance of feeling that it has everything to teach others and nothing to learn from them is not just.
A true revolution of values will lay hand on the world order and say of war, “This way of settling differences is not just.” This business of burning human beings with napalm, of filling our nation’s homes with orphans and widows, of injecting poisonous drugs of hate into the veins of peoples normally humane, of sending men home from dark and bloody battlefields physically handicapped and psychologically deranged, cannot be reconciled with wisdom, justice, and love. A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death.”
– Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
“With this faith, we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood. With this faith, we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day.
And this will be the day — this will be the day when all of God’s children will be able to sing with new meaning:
My country ’tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing.
Land where my fathers died, land of the Pilgrim’s pride,
From every mountainside, let freedom ring!
And if America is to be a great nation, this must become true.”
-Dr. Martin Luther King, excerpt from ‘I Have a Dream” speech
“In the end we will remember not the words of our enemies but the silence of our friends” – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
“If you can’t fly, then run…
if you can’t run, then walk…..
if can’t walk, then crawl….
but whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward.”
-Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
“Courage is the price that life exacts for granting peace. The soul that knows it not, knows no release from little things” – Amelia Earhart
“No test or temptation that comes your way is beyond the course of what others have had to face. All you need to remember is that God will never let you down; He’ll never let you be pushed past your limit; He’ll always be there to help you come through it.” – 1 Corinthians 10:13
No matter what your faith is, always stand confident in who you are and what guides in and know that you have everything within you to push through any circumstance and come out victorious on the other side!
“I am not afraid…I was born to do this.” – Joan of Arc
Short and sweet. Remember that we should never fear what is in front of us because we were all created with the strength and knowledge we need to accomplish and overcome anything that we set our sights on. Remember this and PROCEED.
“Everything which relates to God is infinite. We must therefore, while we keep our hearts humble, keep our aims high. Our highest services are indeed but finite, imperfect. But as God is unlimited in goodness, He should have our unlimited love.” – Hannah More
